We’ve been helping dogs and their owners since 2010, and we’re incredibly proud of the results we’ve achieved over the years.

Our journey started with a rescue dog named Merlyn—a unique mix of Labrador, Collie, and Staff—who came into our lives in 2008. Like many owners facing difficult behaviour challenges, we turned to training classes and behaviourists for help. Unfortunately, the advice we received didn’t feel right—and in some cases, was completely inappropriate, even suggesting he be put to sleep.

Dogs primarily hate being left alone, harsh punishments, loud noises (fireworks, vacuums), and having their personal space violated by tight hugs or forced interactions. They also strongly dislike overwhelming scents like citrus, vinegar, and ammonia, as well as being unable to sniff during walks. 

Here is a breakdown of what dogs dislike most:

Isolation: Separation anxiety is common, and being left alone for long periods is high on the list of dislikes.

Behavioral & Social Dislikes:

  • Hugs and Restraint: Tight hugs or being held down can make dogs feel trapped and stressed.
  • Being Teased: This includes playing keep-away, inconsistent rules, or disrupting them while eating.
  • Yelling/Harsh Training: Loud noises and anger directed at them are confusing and frightening.
Sensory Dislikes
  • Loud Noises: Vacuum cleaners, thunder, fireworks, and thunderstorms can be painful to their sensitive ears.
  • Strong Smells: Citrus, vinegar, cleaning products, perfumes, alcohol, mothballs, and chili peppers.
  • Restricted Movement: Wearing costumes or clothes that restrict movement or feel unnatural.
Handling Dislikes:
  • No Sniffing Time: Not allowing them to smell their surroundings during a walk, which is how they explore the world.
  • Patting on the Head: Many dogs prefer scratches on the chin or chest, finding head pats condescending or uncomfortable.
  • Eye Contact: Intense or direct eye contact from strangers can be interpreted as a threat.

Correcting bad dog behavior involves consistently rewarding good actions, redirecting unwanted actions, and preventing rehearsal of bad habits. Key techniques include reward-based training, using a leash to manage behavior, and providing enough mental and physical stimulation to prevent boredom. The goal is to set the dog up for success

Your dog's eyes do much of their talking. You can communicate back to them using the same language of eye contact. When a dog gives you long, lingering eye contact, it's a way of saying “I love you.” A recent study shows that oxytocin, the 'love chemical,' goes up in both dogs and humans when they share a kind gaze.

If your dog is acting too hyper, jumping up, nudging you, barking at you, pawing at you, constantly bringing you toys etc…. that's a good time to simply show (with action instead of words) that you will not engage with them. Don't speak to them, simply turn your body away and show you will not be forced to interact.
